Thanksgiving is a time to gather, reflect, and express gratitude—but for some families in our community, it can also be a time of stress and uncertainty. That’s why United Way of Greater Knoxville’s (UWGK) Community Schools are stepping up to ensure local families can celebrate over a delicious and comforting meal.
Thanks to the incredible collaboration between Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, Knox County Parks and Recreation, the Knox County Mayor’s Office, and dedicated volunteers, we’re distributing over 500 Thanksgiving meals this year. Each basket, valued at $57, is filled with everything needed for a traditional Thanksgiving feast, totaling an impressive $28,500 in value.
“These baskets are more than meals—they’re a message to families that their community sees them, supports them, and wants them to have a joyful holiday,” said Adam Fritts, UWGK’s Director of Community Schools. “This initiative reminds us of the power of collaboration and what we can achieve when we come together to serve others.”
Building on Prior Success
This is a long-standing partnership for our local Community Schools. For over 10 years, we have been working with churches and communities surrounding our schools to collect and distribute Thanksgiving donations to families in need. In 2023, this initiative reached over 800 local families in time for Thanksgiving.
This year, we are still collecting baskets and will continue distributing them through Thanksgiving Day. We’re excited to see how many we’ll deliver this year, but the number isn’t the only measure of success—it’s the smiles and the stories of gratitude from families in our Community Schools that inspire us to keep going.
Making a Difference, One Basket at a Time
This initiative is a great example of our mission to unite people and resources to strengthen communities. By working together, we’re not just putting food on tables; we’re creating memories, easing stressors, and supporting our neighbors.
Community Schools make it simple for families to access these resources, ensuring that no one feels left behind during the holidays. Together with our partners, we’re making Thanksgiving a time of abundance and connection for all.
