Childcare

Expanding the availability of childcare spots in high-quality early learning environments.

Many families have limited access to affordable, high-quality childcare. We are working with local partners to create more high-quality childcare options for parents.

Creating Accessible High-Quality Childcare

United Way of Greater Knoxville is partnering with the YMCA of East Tennessee, the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley and Olive Tree Learning Academy to increase capacity at their childcare centers.

In 2023, we helped create 178 new childcare spots in Knox County and open one innovative childcare micro-center.

Childcare Needs in Knox County

Between December 2019 and March 2021, nearly 16,000 childcare centers closed permanently across the United States, denying working families access to childcare. With 26,281 children too young to start kindergarten in Knox County, childcare centers are essential for working parents.

Finding childcare can be a daunting challenge. Even with meticulous planning and getting on waitlists early, there is not enough capacity to meet the full needs of our workforce. Too many children in East Tennessee are not entering kindergarten ready to learn at their grade level. By investing in our children now, we can break the cycle and build a brighter future.

When you support UWGK, you are helping expand access to high-quality, trauma-informed childcare.
