Tara is a middle school student who struggled academically and was very shy in class. She felt very isolated, and her social skills and grades were steadily decreasing. Tara was referred for the United Way of Greater Knoxville’s funded tutoring intervention at Northwest Middle Community School, and she began attending regularly. As the year went on, she became not only a friend to another student in the group, but a peer mentor.
Even though Tara entered the tutoring intervention below where she needed to be, she gained confidence by helping another student (who was performing at a lower level than her) grow. The difference the tutoring sessions made for Tara were remarkable. Not only did she achieve great gains academically, but her interpersonal and peer interactions also improved. She has become a leader this year and continues to help others around her.
United Way of Greater Knoxville is proud to partner with agencies like the Great Schools Partnership and to be able to support students in our community, regardless of their financial situations. Unite Way works hard with our partner agencies to turn today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders. Change doesn’t happen alone. To live better, we must LIVE UNITED.
