For years, Stan had suffered from severe spinal pain and, as a result, extreme depression. Unfortunately, these conditions hindered his abilities to fully complete housekeeping chores in his apartment. Stan’s landlord, unaware of Stan’s conditions, gave him an eviction notice due to unsafe and unsanitary conditions in his apartment. After receiving the notice, Stan requested a hearing with the housing complex; however, the decision to evict Stan was upheld and he received a detainer warrant to bring the eviction to court.

Fortunately, it was at this time that Stan contacted Legal Aid of East Tennessee for help. Attorney Christina Magrans-Tillery immediately took Stan’s case and began working hard to save his housing. Magrans-Tillery requested a reasonable accommodation, provided for by the Fair Housing Act, due to Stan’s disability. As a result of this request, the detainer warrant was put on hold for six months to allow Stan to work with a social worker and get his apartment cleaned up. With Legal Aid’s help, Stan was able to keep his housing and receive the services and support he needed to keep up with not only his housing, but his day-to-day activities as well.
